How the Egcobox® thermal break balcony connector works

Shear force bar, close-fitting compression unit and tensile bar...? Sometimes it can be confusing exactly what these elements are needed for in the Egcobox®. Find out more in the video!

The Egcobox® cantilever slab connection is used for the thermal separation of reinforced concrete cantilever slabs. In addition to the insulation material, the Egcobox® consists of the following load-bearing elements: Tensile bar, shear force bar and close-fitting compression unit.

Force transmission explained using the chain model
The chain model is particularly suitable for illustrating force transmission, as it makes the type of forces to be absorbed (tension, compression) clearly recognisable.

There is a slab inside the building and a balcony slab outside the building. Both panels must transfer forces across the insulation joint. In a typical application, we realise this by means of tensile, shear force and compression elements for moment and shear loads.
The cantilever demonstrates particularly well that all three load-bearing elements must be present, otherwise a balance of forces along the connection could no longer be achieved. We remove the compression element from the model as an example. You can see that the equilibrium can no longer be achieved - the balcony could not be connected to the ceiling slab in a force-fit manner.

Functions of the relevant support elements
Watch the video to see how the elements of the Egcobox® work together and what role they play in the stability and safety of the cantilever connection. Enrico Tartsch shows the functions of the respective load-bearing elements:

Thermal bridges can be minimised with the Egcobox® thermally insulating cantilever connection. By using the Egcobox® static connection element, an external component and an internal component are thermally separated from each other. product page Egcobox®
