Construction of a modern, centralised wastewater treatment plant to ensure that regional waste management and environmental standards are met in the long term.
The project was necessary to replace the ageing existing plant, improve the efficiency of wastewater treatment and ensure long-term compliance with statutory requirements for water protection. The treated effluent from the plant is discharged into the Fischbach under controlled conditions. Furthermore, the treated water serves secondary purposes: during the summer months, some of it is supplied to the agricultural sector and, where necessary, is available as an additional fire-fighting water reserve for the local fire brigade.
The structural work for a central wastewater treatment plant places extreme demands on the durability and watertightness of the reinforced concrete used. The concrete structures at the St. Gangloff treatment plant – in particular the aeration tank, the secondary clarifier and the underground inlet channels – are in constant contact with mechanically abrasive and chemically aggressive wastewater. To withstand these stresses in the long term without the need for refurbishment, the structural shell was constructed as a watertight concrete structure. To achieve the required concrete quality and absolute watertightness, two specialised system solutions based on modern concrete technology were used at St. Gangloff:
The water-draining formwork membrane Zemdrain® and the coated metal waterstop Fradiflex®.
The combined use of Zemdrain® for surface quality and Fradiflex® for joint construction ensures that the concrete structures at the St. Gangloff sewage treatment works will reach their planned service life without premature concrete damage. The structural shell thus forms a durable and completely watertight foundation for the mechanical systems and building envelope, which are currently under construction.
