Road of the future

Oss, Netherlands

The transformation of the N329 into the "road of the future" is the way ahead for road design and technology.

The cambered and textured concrete surfaces were designed with Zemdrain® CPF liner and meet the requirements for exposed concrete surfaces. The use of Zemdrain® not only guarantees a blowhole free concrete surface, it also supports sustainability; a primary aim of the motorway upgrade.

After concreting, the controlled permeability CPF liner drains off excess water from the edge zone of the concrete resulting in a harder, denser and more resistant surface. The concrete upkeep costs are therefore reduced and the lifespans of concrete structures are demonstrably extended.

Sustainability at both the ecological and economic level was the central subject of the road project.
Along with solar-power systems in the form of meter-high trees at the side of the road and a system for recovery of heat from the carriageway, a sophisticated traffic guidance system contributes to the environmental-sustainability of the new motorway. The small LED lights mounted on the asphalt turn green when vehicles are travelling at the right speed to reach the next traffic light in its green phase. These signals prevent unnecessary braking and accelerating and so reduce emissions.

The transformation of the N329 into the "road of the future" is the way ahead for road design and technology.
