The Shard is the tallest building in Western Europe.
At 1,016 ft high and with more than 70 floors, the Shard provides 900,000 sq ft comprising office space for Transport for London, a hotel and luxury apartments, with spectacular 360° views of South East London.
Located in London Bridge Quarter, the Shard is well-connected by Central London's transport infrastructure. MAX FRANK supplied Shearail® punching shear reinforcement system to Byrne Bros. (Formwork) on this project.
'Top-down' construction techniques allowed the sub and superstructure to be worked on simultaneously - a process never previously attempted on a building of this scale. The top 30 floors were constructed using post-tensioned slab construction.
Byrne Bros. were awarded 'The Building Award' at The London Civil Engineering Awards 2010 by The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) for the innovative construction methodology at The Shard.
The slender, spire-like tower and expressive use of glazing is considered, by the Architect, to be a positive addition to the London skyline - as the weather and seasons change, so will the appearance of the structure.
