In 2015 the first minaret was built in Stuttgart. Fratec® forming formwork was used for the special column architecture of the minaret.
A former car repair shop is now the centre of the Islamische Gemeinschaft Stuttgart e. V.. Stuttgart's first and so far only minaret has been built next to a former car repair shop which has been converted into a mosque.
A minaret is the key feature of a mosque. Traditionally, the tower provides an elevated place for the muezzin who calls Muslims to pray five times a day. It was important for the Islamic Community in Stuttgart to show that Islam stands for a peaceful and considerate relationship. Therefore, not only does this minaret have no balcony for the muezzin but also the height of the minaret was limited to 15 m, instead of the possible 27 m. The design of the minaret is modern and simple but its geometry nevertheless placed high requirements on the concrete construction.
The basic form of the minaret is a square column with semicircular depressions on its four sides. These negative shapes create the impression of a circular column despite the basic rectangular form. The column is interrupted by a cube with ornamentation reminiscent of the traditional ornamentation of minarets. From a height of 12 m the column tapers to a point. A larger and a smaller hemisphere are recessed into the concrete on all sides of the column. The top of the column is adorned with a crescent moon, an important Muslim symbol.
The minaret, which was built on site apart from a few components, was created with the help of Fratec® formwork. The special formwork offers great design freedom and facilitated the simple implementation of the special column architecture of the minaret. The individually formable material was manufactured exactly to the plans of the architect and delivered to the building site with the flexible Tubbox® Multi column former as supporting formwork. The special coating of the formwork guaranteed its easy removal and a uniform, blowhole-free concrete surface even without the use of release agents.
Max Frank GmbH Co. KG offered a complete solution for concreting the demanding minaret form using Fratec® and Tubbox® Multi special formwork.
