Drinking water reservoir to serve 135,000 people

Bern, Switzerland

Construction of a high-capacity drinking water reservoir for reliable supply to 135,000 people.

The cantonal capital Bern focuses on long-lasting infrastructure. The construction of drinking water reservoirs is a task for generations. In Bern, a project was implemented that not only ensures a reliable water supply for 135,000 residents but also protects the habitats of adjacent water bodies and their fish populations through ecological foresight.

The MAX FRANK solutions

To meet the strict Swiss hygiene standards and the required service life, three key technologies were employed, working hand in hand:

  • Zemdrain® CPF liner: The ‘skin’ of the concrete. By removing excess water and air from the edge zone, it creates an extremely dense, hard, and pore-free surface. The result: germs and algae cannot take hold, and the cleaning effort for the Bern water supply is greatly reduced.
  • Stremaform® for working joints: Essential for connecting concrete sections. The construction joint created with Stremaform® features an optimal surface roughness, ensuring a load-bearing connection between the concrete pours.
  • Fibre concrete spacers: Safety down to the last detail. The fiber-reinforced concrete spacers used are drinking-water approved and ensure the precise adherence to concrete cover. Essential for preventing long-term corrosion and maintaining the purity of the water.

The combination of a robust construction method supported by MAX FRANK and intelligent monitoring technology ensures the long-term functionality of Bern’s infrastructure. The project demonstrates impressively that sustainability is achieved through high-quality construction so that even in 100 years water can continue to flow from the Emmental to Bern households without the need for energy.
