Nine Elms

London, United Kingdom

MAX FRANK supplied Shearail® prefabricated punching shear reinforcement to the south west London District re-development.

The Nine Elm re-development scheme is a £450M hybrid application, in the south west London district, comprising a new 80,000 sq.ft. Sainsbury’s store, over 700 new homes and 27,000 sq.ft. of local shops, restaurants and office space.

A series of residential buildings have been developed above the store and station, culminating a group of three residential towers. Further benefits include a series of mixed uses at ground level, including; a new pedestrian street which enables access to New Covent Garden Market, extensive roof garden amenities for all residents and Northern Line extension proposals.

MAX FRANK’s Shearail® punching shear reinforcement was supplied to the site throughout the 4-year construction period. Shearail® prefabricated rails were installed in the new Sainsbury’s store and further rails were later required for the construction of several residential basement units.

The weight of a concrete slab, supported directly onto a column, can result in concentrated localised shear stresses, causing the slab to ‘punch’ through the column below. Shearail® increases the shear resistance of a slab and safely transfers the shear load from the slab to the column.

Shearail® is EC2 and BS 8110 compliant, enabling site work to be carried out far more effectively and efficiently than traditional loose links. As a pre-fabricated system, Shearail® is designed to increase construction speed, improve build quality and reduce dependency on skilled labour – significantly reducing on-site costs.

Manufactured from approved materials under a certified Quality Management System, Shearail® provides Engineers and Contractors with the assurance that the material is from a traceable source and has been independently tested and verified for use in concrete floors in accordance with BS EN 1992-1-1 (EC2) and BS 8110 standards.
