The Bernau Visitor Center for the UNESCO World Heritage Bauhaus, located in close proximity to the former ADGB Federal School, has been newly constructed.
The Bernau Visitor Center (UNESCO World Heritage Bauhaus) presents itself as elegant, transparent, and spacious. The glass pavilion, covering an area of almost 500 square meters, is situated directly across from the former federal school of the German General Federation of Trade Unions (ADGB), which was constructed according to the plans of Swiss architects Hannes Meyer and Hans Wittwer, with the participation of the Bauhaus workshops in Dessau.
New building pays homage to Bauhaus ideas
The new building pays homage to Bauhaus ideals, with Steimle Architekten of Stuttgart designing the Bernau Visitor Center. Architect Thomas Steimle explained that their aim was to create a pavilion building made of concrete, glass, steel, and wood that does not have a historicizing effect and instead serves as a platform to meaningfully combine the various functions as an exhibition space and meeting place.
Following extensive restoration and reconstruction work from 2001 to 2007, a focal point for visitors is situated opposite to the building's entrance. The solid new building features an exposed concrete appearance, and the ceilings have been extended with Sorp 10® room acoustic absorbers. These sound absorbers, already integrated into the concrete ceiling, reduce the reverberation time and ensure high-quality room acoustics.
